Visiting Fulford

Map York

The area to the south is rich in marks and occupations dating from the bronze age, through Roman occupation and into the medieval period have been uncovered.

However, the area of the battle is largely clear. Regular flooding has removed superficial marks. Excavation and finds have shown that agriculture was carried out along Germany Beck as early as the bronze era. But in the centuries around the battle, the environmental evidence suggests that this was mainly pasture with limited plough-land.
